Congratulations in starting your Orthokeratology Journey!

This page is dedicated in guiding first time wearers in using their Orthokeratology lenses. From discussing the expectations to different tutorials in handling your Ortho-K lenses.

Some things that you needs to know about Ortho-K safety:

  1. Follow-ups are important. Mandatory follow ups such as 1 day after wearing the lenses, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after wearing the lenses are important. This is to make sure that the Ortho-K lenses are sitting in the Cornea where they are intended.

  2. Clean and handle lenses properly. Ortho-K lenses are safe to use, provided, they are handled and disinfected properly, and very easy. Improper handling of the Ortho-K lenses may result to serious problems. Handling of the lenses will be further explained in below.

  3. Report unusual symptoms. Problems that are found during its early stage are easier to manage. Contact numbers will also be provided just in case you need to contact us immediately. Unusual signs and symptoms will be mentioned below.

  4. Ortho-K lenses usually lasts a year. It will be up to your eyecare practitioner to determine if the lenses are still suitable for wearing.

Important note:

  1. Cleaning solutions that will be given by your eyecare practitioner are effective in disinfecting your lenses. Every time you remove them from their container after being soaked for hours, the lenses are considered sterile. A dirty hand may transfer some unwanted microorganisms on the lenses.

  2. DO NOT USE TAP WATER. Regardless if you have a filtered/drinkable tap water, never use it to rinse the lenses. Acanthamoeba may be present in the tap water and can cause blinding disease.

  3. Make sure no dirt or lint are on the lenses.

  4. Always ask your eyecare practitioner first if you are planning to change your contact lens solution.

What to expect during your first few weeks of using Ortho-K

What to expect:

  1. Foreign body sensation. Should be gone in a few minutes of wearing the lenses.

  2. Mild dryness in the corners of the eyes. If reoccurring, lubricating drops can easily fix this.

  3. Blurry vision is expected up to 1 week. Treatment should be 70% by the first week and 90% to 100% by 1 month. Speed of the treatment process may be influenced on how high your eyeglass prescription is and Corneal integrity.

  4. Glares and halos are normal in the first few months. This should clear up through “neuroadaptation”. This may persist on Children who uses Ortho-K for Myopia Control.

What not to expect:

Here are some abnormal occurences upon insertion:

  1. Pain, light sensitivity, burning, stinging, and excessive watering on insertion. If this occurs, remove the lens and rinse the lenses with Contact Lens Solution.

  2. Persistent redness, pain, or light sensitivity even after removing and rinsing the lenses.

  3. If this occurs, make sure to report this to your Eyecare practitioner, immediately via the number listed in this brochure.
