What is an Artificial Eye?
Our eyes, which is our organ for sight, is one of the most important parts of our body where the majority of the information we receive from our day to day lives comes from the Eye.
However, there are some instances where the removal of an Eye is needed, or when the Eyeball is damaged causing it to shrink, causing an undesirable appearance of what has been a person’s eye. This is where an Artificial Eye comes in.
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about Artificial Eyes.
What is an Artificial Eye?
An Artificial Eye also called a Prosthetic Eye, is a craniofacial prosthesis aimed to replace a damaged, shrunken, or removed eyeball to maintain the appearance of having a normal Eye. Aside from Aesthetic purpose, the prosthesis also helps maintain the shape of the eye socket, by stopping it from shrinking.
Who can fit Artificial Eyes in the Philippines?
As mandated by Republic Act 8050, a board-certified Optometrist is allowed to fit Artificial Eyes. Meaning, the person fitting the Artificial Eye should have graduated Doctor of Optometry, as well as passing the Licensure Examination given by the Professional Regulation Commission of the Philippines.
What are Ready-made Artificial Eyes and Custom-Made Artificial Eyes?
Ready-made Artificial Eyes are as its name indicate, “Ready Made”. Doctors would usually just pick dozens of Artificial Eyes, and choose the best one that fits. They are relatively cheaper, however, they are not fitted thoroughly.
As for the Custom-Made Artificial Eye, the Ocularist is able to get the exact shape of your eye socket, the direction, as well as the color of the prosthetic eye.
Do they Require Surgery?
No. The fitting process does not require any surgery. Though, for those who had their real eye removed, a clearance from their Ophthalmologist is highly recommended.
How long can one Artificial Eye last?
There is no definite expiry date for an Artificial Eye, however, many Ocularists around the world suggest that the Artificial Eye be replaced at least every five to seven(5 to 7) years. This is due to the Artificial Eye being porous, and a possible bacterial build-up inside the Artificial eye that may cause future problems.
How often should I come back to my Doctor?
The tissues inside your Eye Socket may change over time while using an Artificial Eye. Therefore, it is important to see your doctor and check if there are necessary adjustments needed to be made. Aside from that, as you wear your Artificial Eye, Mucus may sometimes dry up on the surface of the prosthesis, your doctor may also polish the Artificial Eye to bring back the glossiness and smoothness for more comfortable wearing.
