How does Ortho-K work?
Orthokeratology, commonly known as Ortho-K, is a revolutionary, non-surgical method of vision correction that reshapes your cornea while you sleep. It offers freedom from eyeglasses and daytime contact lenses by correcting vision temporarily, allowing you to enjoy clear eyesight throughout the day.
The Ortho-K Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
1. Custom Fitted Lenses:
Ortho-K uses specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses that are tailored to fit the unique shape of your eye. During your consultation, an eye care professional will map the surface of your cornea using advanced technology to create a custom lens specifically for you.
2. Overnight Wear:
These lenses are worn overnight while you sleep. As you rest, the Ortho-K lenses gently reshape the cornea—the clear front surface of your eye. The process of reshaping focuses on flattening the cornea, which corrects refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism.
3. Corneal Reshaping:
Ortho-K lenses work by applying gentle pressure to the cornea. This pressure temporarily alters the cornea’s curvature, improving how light is refracted in your eye and leading to clearer vision. The changes to the cornea are minuscule (less than 50 microns, smaller than a strand of hair), but they are enough to make a significant difference in your ability to see clearly.
4. Daytime Clear Vision:
After wearing the lenses overnight, you remove them in the morning. The reshaped cornea allows you to see clearly during the day without needing glasses or daytime contact lenses. The effects of Ortho-K are temporary, lasting for about a day or two, which is why regular overnight wear is necessary to maintain clear vision.
5. Maintenance and Follow-Up:
Ortho-K lenses require proper cleaning and storage after each use, just like any other contact lenses. Your eye care provider will schedule periodic follow-ups to monitor your progress and ensure that the lenses continue to fit comfortably and effectively.
5. The Ortho-K Lenses are removed after waking up. After removing the lenses, the user can enjoy clearer vision without wearing eyeglasses and Contact Lenses all-day long.
6. This effect may last up to a day or two. The Ortho-K user may need to wear their lenses every night to maintain a clear vision. Sometimes, wearing the lenses can be lessened to 5 to 6 times a week once the vision is stable.
7. The lenses are soaked in a high-quality Contact Lens solution while they are not being used. This makes sure that bacteria’s, viruses, fungus, and other harmful pathogens are destroyed before using the lenses again.
8. Besides the daily used contact lens solution, your eye care practitioner will prescribe a stronger Cleaning Solution.
This more powerful solution is used less frequently. It is more effective in removing and cleaning protein from the surface of the lens. This assures us that the lenses are free from any microorganisms that may contaminate the lens.
