The Ortho-K Treatment Fitting Process

What is the Ortho-K Fitting Process?

Are you considering Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) to improve your vision without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses? Ortho-K uses special lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea, allowing you to see clearly throughout the day. But how does the Ortho-K fitting process work? Let’s break it down in simple terms.

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Eye Exam

The first step in the Ortho-K fitting process is a thorough eye exam. This is important to check your overall eye health and determine if Ortho-K is the right solution for you. During this consultation, our eye care professional will:

• Measure your prescription and assess the level of your myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism.

• Discuss your lifestyle, vision needs, and whether you’re a good candidate for Ortho-K.

Who is Ortho-K for?

Ortho-K is ideal for both children and adults with mild to moderate myopia or astigmatism. It’s especially great for people who want to avoid wearing glasses or daytime contact lenses, and it can also help slow the progression of myopia in children.

Step 2: Corneal Mapping

Next, we use a special device to create a detailed map of your cornea. This step is crucial because the Ortho-K lenses are custom-made to fit your eyes precisely. The device measures the shape and curvature of your cornea, much like a topographic map, to ensure your lenses will provide the perfect fit.

Step 3: Custom Lens Design and Fitting

Using the corneal map, we design your custom Ortho-K lenses. These lenses are gas-permeable, which means they allow oxygen to pass through to keep your eyes healthy. Once the lenses are ready, you’ll come back to our office for the initial fitting. During this appointment, you will:

• Learn how to properly insert and remove your Ortho-K lenses.

• Be shown how to care for and clean your lenses.

• Try the lenses on to make sure they feel comfortable and fit properly.

Don’t worry—it might take a little practice, but we’ll guide you every step of the way to make sure you’re comfortable with the process.

Step 4: First Night of Wearing Ortho-K Lenses

After your fitting, you’ll take your lenses home and wear them for the first time overnight. These lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye (the cornea) while you sleep, so you can enjoy clear vision the next day without needing glasses or contacts. The reshaping is painless, and you won’t even notice it while you’re asleep.

Step 5: Follow-Up Appointments

The morning after your first night of wearing the lenses, you’ll return to the office for a follow-up appointment. We’ll check how well the lenses worked and whether any adjustments need to be made. It’s common to need a few follow-ups to fine-tune the fit and make sure your vision is improving as expected.

First Week: Most people notice an improvement in their vision after the very first night, but full correction usually happens over the first few days to weeks.

Regular Checkups: Periodic checkups will help ensure your lenses are working well and that your eyes remain healthy. We’ll monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Why is the Ortho-K Fitting Process Important?

The fitting process is essential for making sure your Ortho-K lenses work properly. Since the lenses are custom-designed for your unique eye shape, we want to ensure that they’re comfortable, effective, and safe for you to wear long-term.
