Is Ortho-K Safe?

Orthokeratology is considered as a safe process for you.

Here is why:

There have been many researches about the safety of Orthokeratology lenses. But here are two of the most latest researches that concluded that Ortho-K is a safe process.

First is from M. Bullimore last July 2013. In his paper, they surveyed 86 Orthokeratology practitioners where they needed to submit information on patients with painful red eyes who have been wearing Ortho-K lenses for 3 months or more. This research was represented by 2599 patient-years. In this paper, only 8 were reported with corneal infiltrates with painful red eye, but only 2 were classified as Microbial Keratitis.

Conclusion:

The research concluded that the overall estimated incidence of Microbial Keratitis is only 7.7 of 10,000 person-year for children and adults. This means that Orthokeratology is as safe as a high-quality daytime Contact Lens. (Bullimore 2013)

Another similar paper was published by Y. Liu and Peiying Xie about the safety of Orthokeratology (Xie 2016). They gathered 170 publications and concluded that Orthokeratology has the same risk as soft contact lenses in the market today. The long-term success of the Ortho-K treatment is through a combination of:

a.       Proper lens fitting by an eyecare practitioner

b.       Compliance to lens care, especially cleaning

c.       Routine follow-ups

d.       Timely treatment of any simple problem
